FUNCTIONS OF A GREASETRAP:

• Grease Traps slow down the flow of hot greasy water and allow it to cool
• Grease oil and fat separate and float to the top
• Solid waste falls to the bottom and begins to decompose
• Grease oil and fat are trapped by baffles or weirs that cover the inlet and outlet of the tank, preventing them from flowing out
• The cool water continues to flow down the pipe to the sewer

Fats, oils, greases and other food wastes accumulate and build up inside the Grease traps, leading eventually to drain failure and major disruption in the kitchen. Grease can actually turn to a hard soap-like compound that ultimately requires drains being dug up at huge cost and inconvenience. LOCAL GOVERNMENT (WATER POLUTION) ACTS 1977 AND 1990 AMENDMENT Make it mandatory that waste produced must be intercepted and treated at source. The Passive Grease Trap with a bacteria treatment program is the approved method of interception and treatment.
